Original Oratory Topics
Selecting an Original Oratory topic is a personal, highly individual choice. One topic that ideally suits one most likely will not work for another. When choosing an OO topic, remember the following:
1. Choose something you love - selecting anything less will result in an Original Oratory that is not heart-felt and, most likely, lazily done because the topic means little to the competitor.
2. Choose the most pertinent topic - of the possible OO topics you love, choose the one which relates most to your life at that moment. Selecting something which clicks will lead to a more impassioned OO.
3. Avoid potentially offensive or polarizing material - while most people will have at least some opinion on any issue, it is still best to attempt to avoid the topics that are highly polarizing. Such as abortion. There will be little which can be said to convince an audience member to change their opinion on the issue, and if their opinion differs from that of your Original Oratory, the audience's attention might be lost. Not to say "safe" topics are good topics either, they're not, but try to avoid the no-budge social/political topics. Also, stray from OO topics that can be highly offensive. Even if interesting ideas are present, the risk of annoying and alienating an audience is something best not messed with.
4. Avoid too obscure, "boring" topics - while you might find a particular topic fascinating, be sure to remember that your audience needs to be interested as well. A topic does not have to be well known, but it needs to hold an audience's interest.
While the best Original Oratory topic is something original and personally selected, sometimes brainstorming ideas leads to writers blocks.
