The Best Sources for Extemporaneous Speaking

Just as a bit of a disclaimer, I don't read every single blog on this site.

Things NOT to bring to a speech meet

Disclaimer: If you have no sense of humor, now is the time to leave. Ok, are all the fuddy-duds gone? Good. Now, here is my totally random list of things NOT to bring to a speech meet. Feel free to add.

- A radioactive Banana

- A Carousel

- Size 8XL Pants

- Your pet ferret

- an anvil

- a kilo of swiss cheese

- a Sham-wow

Unconventional ways to practice

With nationals for both NFL and CFL coming up, everyone is running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to get ready.  Practices increase and things get more intense as everyone tries to keep their eyes on the prize.  Generally practice consists of running your event into the ground.  Do your HI piece 20 times until you get the timing on that line JUST rig

Extempers buy a lot of shoes...

No, this isn't what you're thinking. While we do have to carry heavy boxes and our shoes might wear out 3 days before an interper's,  that is beside the point. I was printing off research today and noticed that out of the 40 articles I printed, about 30 of them had adds for Piperlime shoes at the top.

George Lopez?

I realized the other day that I have no life when I started relating my life to an episode of George Lopez. At about 7 pm I finished my Honors English project, then had to do chemistry and history homework. When I was done with all of that I came down to the basement to print off extemp research and practice my prose.

Speech and School

I was thinking last night about how I have to start considering which classes to take next year. It's a big decision after all. Junior year is the year colleges look at most when it comes to grades and curriculum.

Small Pleasures

Waking up at 4 am and getting on a bus full of teenagers sporting bed-head. Talking to walls. Changing into pantyhose in a cramped fast-food restaurant bathroom. Getting an inexplicable score and a blank ballot. These are the small pleasures that make us truly love speech. It isn't always the thrill of the competition and the ribbons and trophies we see every night before we go to bed.

Pain in the Box

Is it just me or is an extemp box a humongous pain? Sure, it is your most valuable resource in a round.

Hi everyone!

Tournament Do's and Dont's

I figured sharing some of those lightbulb moments from tournaments would be a fun way to help the newbies and to give those of us who have gone into sleep mode in the off-season a refresher.

1. If you're double entered, DO find your rooms ahead of time and write your number on the board, noting that you are Double-entered and will be late.
